Educational Planning

The Student Planning Tool

Having an Educational  Plan (Ed Plan) keeps you on track to reach your goal. In order to maintain priority registration, students must have an education plan for each semester.

There are two types:

  • Abbreviated Ed Plan (1 to 2 semesters to get you started)
  • Comprehensive Ed Plan (laying out all of the courses you need to reach your goal)

All students have access to Student Planning, a planning tool found on your Student Menu in WebAdvisor. You can start to plan your courses using the Student Planning tool at any time on your own. Having courses planned using the Student Planning tool will meet the Ed Plan requirement to maintain your priority registration.

Note: Students taking a class occasionally for fun or lifelong education do not need to create a plan. However, having a plan will ensure that you have an earlier registration date.

To learn more about how to use the Student Planning tool, stop by the Counseling department in the 100 Building on the Aptos campus or at the Watsonville Center or watch one of these videos:

Registering for Classes Using Student Planning

New Students - Have never developed an Education Plan, or want to learn more about how to plan your classes.

  • If you have attended other colleges, arrange to have official transcripts sent to Cabrillo Admissions and Records. Official transcripts from previously attended colleges need to be on file before you schedule an appointment with a counselor.
  • If you have never attended college and want to know about your placement options as well as how to build an abbreviated Ed plan, attend a Placement and Planning Workshop and or an Ed Plan Workshop.
  • Develop an Abbreviated Education Plan at that workshop using the Student Planning tool on Web Advisor Schedule a counseling appointment (not express advising) to revise and further develop your Education Plan. Multiple appointments may be needed for a comprehensive ed plan. If Financial Aid requested an Ed Plan, let your counselor know that you need your Education Plan to be approved for Financial Aid.

You have developed an Education Plan but it is out of date/needs revising OR if you have already completed an AA/AS degree or higher.

  • If you have attended other colleges, arrange to have official transcripts sent to Cabrillo Admissions and Records. Official transcripts from previously attended colleges need to be on file before you schedule an appointment with a counselor.
  • Confirm that you are in the correct Program/Major by selecting “Verify/Change my Program/Major” on your WebAdvisor Student Menu. You can change to a different Program/Major through this same link.
  • Become familiar with the Student Planning tool, found on your main Student Menu on WebAdvisor. Start planning your upcoming terms using the Student Planning tool. To learn more about how to use the Student Planning tool, stop by the Counseling offices in both Aptos and Watsonville.
  • Schedule a counseling appointment (not 10-minute drop-in advising) to revise and further develop your Education Plan. Multiple appointments may be needed for a comprehensive Ed plan. If Financial Aid requested an Ed Plan, let your counselor know that you need your Education Plan to be approved for Financial Aid.
  • If Financial Aid requested an Ed Plan, inform them that you now have an approved Education Plan, by submitting a “Student Correspondence” form through eForms.
